ScanSnap SV600 Scanner Now Available at the Library
The Portland Public Library of Sumner County has a wonderful new scanner available for public use.  Please watch the short video above to see what it can do; it's pretty amazing.  When you visit the library, bring something you'd like to scan as well as a thumb drive to hold your scans.  This is sure to be a popular device.  If it's in use, you can make a reservation to use it by visiting the circulation desk.

2015 Christmas Parade

Parade will start promptly at 5:30 p.m., rain or shine.  This is a lighted Christmas parade.  Line-up will be along Freedom Drive, and the parade will turn left onto TN109.  For details and registration, please contact the Portland Chamber of Commerce at (615) 325-9032.

The Portland Public Library of Sumner County now has six Chromebooks for patrons to check out and use inside the library.  This is the latest technology being used by schools all over the country, so be sure to check it out.  Just bring your library card to the circulation desk.

Portland Public Library Events for December 2015

All Month at the Library.   Elves on the Shelves.    During December you will find a lot of elves on the shelves at the Portland Library.  They will be pointing out things that we want you to notice; new things, holiday things, things that the staff likes, etc.  One special elf will move around the building every week.  Finding him results in a small prize, IF you can find him among all of the others!

 Tuesday, December 1st   It’s All About the Elf Storytime.  6:30  Start off your holiday month with a special family Elf Storytime at the Library.  You will hear stories about traditional elves and Santa’s elves.  Also, make an elf of your own to take home with you.  It will be your twin with your face on it!

 Tuesday, December 8th   Highland Academy Hand Bell Choir Christmas Performance.  4:00 to 4:30   Please join us as we enjoy the hand bell choir from Highland Academy as they will be playing Christmas selections. 

 Friday, December 11th    Lucky Library Bingo. 1:00 to 2:00   Please join us at the Portland Public Library to play Bingo.  We will begin playing at 1:00 in the community room.  No cash prizes, but we give away food, books, gift cards and more! 

Saturday,   December 12th   Saturday Movie Matinee.  11:00  Join us for a family friendly movie.  Please call the library at 615-325-2279 for the rating and the name of the movie. 

 Wednesday, December 16th Christmas Piano Music All Day at the Library. We have the pleasure of hearing several pianists playing the grand piano in the center of the library.  This should put us all in the holiday spirit!

 Thursday, December 17th    Book Club.  11:30 Please join us if you love to read. Join us for some fun!   We will be reading Miss.Buncle’s Book by D. E. Stevenson.   Call the library to reserve your copy.

 Tuesday, December 22nd  Red Cross Blood Drive.  1:00 to 5:00  The Portland Public Library will be hosting a Red Cross blood drive on December 22nd .  The blood drive will last from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please sign up at the circulation desk or call 615-325-2279 for any questions.

 Thursday, December 31st   Happy Noon Year Celebration – Open to all ages!  10:30 to noon.  The countdown and balloon drop will be at the stroke of noon.  This year we have a 50’s theme.  If you have a poodle skirt, saddle shoes, or otherwise want to dress the part, that would be terrific!  We will play some 50’s type games and dance to 50’s music.  If you come in your 50’s attire, be sure to hang on to it, as we will return to the 50’s theme this summer.  This event is for all ages.  It is for those too young to stay up until midnight as well as those too old to stay up! 



Tuesday, December 1st     Middle School Program – Gingerbread Zombies.  4:00-5:00  Come help us celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season as we add a creepy twist to it by making gingerbread zombie cookies!  They will be tasty enough to eat!

 Thursday, December 3rd    May the Knowledge Be With You.  4:00-5:00   Start your journey of becoming as wise as Yoda by attending our Vol State and Star Wars event!  For the first 30 minutes, Rachel Carmack from Volunteer State Community College will be talking to us about college and the Tennessee Promise program.  During the last half hour, she will have a table set up where she will be available to answer any questions and provide additional information.  While others are talking to her, we will be making Star Wars Snowflakes to celebrate the holidays as well as the upcoming release of the new movie.  Refreshments will be provided.

 Thursday,  December 10th  The Best Christmas Party Ever,  4:00 to 5:30  Celebrate the holidays at the library by wearing your ugliest Christmas sweater.  A prize will be given for the most dreadful.  We will also have a snowball fight with marshmallows and play other hilarious games.  Light snacks will be provided.  This event will run from 4:00 to 5:30.   

 Thursday, December 17th   Coloring and Chocolate .  4:00 to 5:00   Take a break from studying for exams and stop by the library.  We will have plenty of chocolate and coloring to beat the stress!

Every Thursday in December       ABC Club.  10:30  ABC club is a program for 3-5 year olds teaching writing and recognition of letters, numbers, and shapes.  This new preschool program is led by Shana Blankenship.

Citizens Awareness Group for Portland, Tennessee
Established in November of 2012  
The Citizens Awareness Group is an organization of everyday citizens of the Portland, Tennessee, area. The CAG considers their group a place where residents can voice their concerns, wishes, and desires in regards to issues within our city. CAG's goal is to be helpful to the community, and not a thorn in their side, by building a bond with the City's governing body and working as a team to help resolve issues and build better community relations. The Citizens Awareness Group is currently established as a Facebook group and can be followed at   All you have to do is click on "Like this page," and whenever CAG has a status update, you will see it in your status feeds.
